Kimberly G. Cannon
BS, CMA (AAMA)
Department Chair
I have been a CMA since 1975 and have loved every minute of this
growing field. I have worked in family practice and OB/GYN
and have taught in the medical assisting curriculum for almost 20
years. If you love what you do then it never becomes "work"
and this is what I love about my career. I have been at GTCC
as the Medical Assisting Department chair for 15 years and still
get a rush when I enter the classroom.
I have a daughter, Ashley who graduated from the same Medical
Assisting program I did (20 years later) and actually replaced me
at the OB/GYN office when I left to come to GTCC. She worked
as a CMA for 5 years and graduated as a RN in 2002. |

I started flying when I was 15 and, before going to college, had
obtained my commercial pilot certificate as well as my CFI and CFII
certificates. I went to college at Auburn University and graduated
with a BS in aerospace engineering. While I was at Auburn, I
was a member of the flying team, competing as part of the National
Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) Region IX. I had an Air
Force ROTC scholarship, but to earn money for other items of
importance, such as food, I did flight instruction and dropped
parachute jumpers. I also became part owner in a twin Commanche,
obtained my MEI certificate, and accrued approximately 850
hours.
After graduating from Auburn, I went to Air Force pilot training
at Vance AFB, OK, then moved down the road to Tinker AFB in
Oklahoma City. I flew the E-3 (AWACS) for 8 years, deploying many
times to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Turkey, and Panama. I became an
aircraft commander, in charge of a crew of 25-35 people and was
upgraded to instructor and evaluator pilot in the E-3. I flew over
2600 hours, including both combat and combat support time.
While in the Air Force, I was also the squadron safety officer and
attended the Air Force school on conducting accident
investigations. Shortly after graduating, I was called to be
the investigating officer for a U-2 accident at Osan Air Base in
South Korea.
After leaving the Air Force, I taught physics in Davidson County
for five years and obtained a Masters of Education degree from
