Welcome to Preschool 1!

There are two lead teachers and one part-time teacher in this classroom. We would like to introduce ourselves to you.

Hello! My name is Ms. Laura. I am one of the lead teachers in this classroom. My work hours are 7:00am-3:30pm. I have been in this field for 10 years. I have my Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education. I received my degree from Montgomery Community College. I believe that children should be nurtured and disciplined. I feel that my job is important and special. The best part about my job is that I make a difference everyday!

Hi! My name is Ms. Alanna. I am one of the lead teachers in this classroom. My work hours are 8:00am-5:00 pm. I have my Bachelor's Degree in Human Development and Family Studies. I also have my Birth-Kindergarten Teaching License.  I received my degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  I have been in this field for 2 years.  I love being an early childhood educator.  The best part about my job is working with the children and their families.

Hello!  My name is Ms. Carla and I assist Laura and Alanna part-time.  My work hours are MWF 11am-5:30pm and TTH 3:30pm-5:30pm. I am certified in Early Childhood Education, first-aid, and CPR. I am currently enrolled in the Early Childhood program here at GTCC and plan to get my Associate's Degree soon. I have been in this field for about a year.  I love working with children!!

We also have other part-time teachers who may assist in our classroom as needed and when available.

As part of GTCC, this center is a lab school. We will have many students observe, take notes, and interact with us throughout each semester. The center also participates with high schools in this area. We have students from these schools, as well, to participate in our program. Preschool 1 staff encourages parent involvement in the classroom. There are many opportunities throughout the year for parents to interact with the center.

We have scheduled progress conferences in January and July. Please feel free to ask questions any time you like. You may even request a conference if you feel one is needed.

The Preschool Lead Teachers each have group time with nine children each. The children are grouped according to age at this time. Ms. Laura teaches the older group and Ms. Alanna teaches the younger group. The children are only separated for group times. The rest of the day is spent together. We will interact with all children everyday.

The teachers and other staff members use Conscious Discipline in the classroom.

What is Conscious Discipline®?

Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive classroom management program and a social-emotional curriculum. It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices. Conscious Discipline® has been specifically designed to make changes in the lives of adults first. The adults, in turn, change the lives of children.

Conscious Discipline® is a way or organizing schools and classrooms around the concept of a School Family. Each member of the family-both adult and child-learns the skills needed to successfully manage life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to others' needs and getting along with others.

Conscious Discipline® empowers teachers and other adults with the Seven Powers for Self Control. These powers change the adults' perception and relationship with conflict, empowering them to be proactive instead of reactive during conflict times. These core beliefs strengthen our utilization of the frontal lobes of the brain. The frontal lobes are to the brain as a conductor is to an orchestra. The frontal lobes are our moral leader.

From the beliefs instilled with the Seven Powers for Self Control emerge the Seven Basic Skills of Discipline. These skills change how adults respond to conflict in such a way as to facilitate the development of the frontal lobes in children. The Seven Skills are the only skills an adult needs to constructively transform conflict into teaching moments. Through the Powers and Skills, adults stay in control of themselves and in charge of children.

As adults begin to change their attitudes and behaviors, so will the children in their care. We cannot teach behaviors and skills that we do not possess ourselves. Dr. Becky Bailey, the author of Conscious Discipline®, originally designed the program for classrooms, but the Brain Smart strategies imparted by the Seven Powers for Self Control and the Seven Basic Skills of Discipline are seamlessly applied to all human interactions. She has since developed Conscious Discipline® for parents and Brain Smart strategies for businesses.

General information about Preschool 1:

  • We can have 18 children in our classroom.
  • We prefer at least one change of clothes to be in your child's cubby daily. Even if your child is potty trained, anything can happen.
  • We have 3 scheduled potty times (9am. 12pm. 3pm.). Your child may go as often as he or she would like to go.
  • We encourage independence and the importance of language.
  • Preschoolers are learning to be more independent. Therefore your child may get bruised, scraped, bumped, etc.
  • We encourage the use of utensils while eating.
  • We use water in our sensory table. We do have smocks, but that doesn't mean your child will not get wet.
  • We use paint. Your child will have direct access to paint. We provide smocks. However, your child can still get dirty.
  • We do go outside most days. Even if it rains in the morning, we may go out in the afternoon. Bring extra clothes and shoes.
  • Each month you will be given a calendar. This calendar will have your child's "Share" dates on it. We expect the share item to match our theme for each week.
  • We allow books brought from home everyday. Do not bring toys unless it is your child's share day.

Welcome to our "school family".
