This course will focus on the changing and challenging times due to the economy, job losses, homeless families, health issues/health insurance, global warming, food supplies, water supply and quality, crime and other issues that influence the way students perform academically, as well as, behaviorally. In addition, class discussion will focus on ways teachers and other educators can address these issues in order that students may perform commensurate with their ability. Further discussion will be devoted to ways of involving parents and personnel from other agencies to address these issues and to identify the responsibilities of each in order that the students may maximize their learning. This course will concentrate on the importance of recognizing students' learning styles in order to understand their strengths and struggles with reading. In addition, students learning styles and their ability to read with understanding and comprehension become more critical as the population of students become more diverse. In order for teachers to plan effective reading instruction for all of their students, this course will emphasize the need to concentrate on the way students learn, their strengths and learning styles. In addition, attention will be given to factors, such as learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, intellectual abilities, English fluency, community, sex and religion influence students' learning styles and their ability to read for enjoyment and in the content areas. This course will focus on the importance of including humor and laughter in the classroom in order to enhance learning and to create a pleasant environment so that all students will enjoy learning. In addition, you will explore ways that humor and laughter are necessary to reduce stress, both for students and teachers. The course will briefly review North Carolina Social Studies Curriculum. The main focus will be to concentrate on global economic, political, diversity, religion, conflicts (wars), terrorism, natural disasters, environment, social and other areas that have a direct influence on what needs to be addressed in Social Studies in today's ever changing Global Community. Discussion will be centered around the rapid change that is witnessed daily, locally and world wide, and how teachers can address these changes while continuing to include US History, Geography, Cultures, Economics, Politics, Government and World History. This course will include a revisit to the theories of Multiple Intelligences, Emotional and Social Intelligences and how understanding these theories can enhance your lesson planning for students as a group and/or individual plans for students with learning differences served in inclusive classrooms or self contained classrooms. In addition, discussion will be expanded to include ways to address these theories with students and parents. Further discussion will be devoted to understanding how these theories relate to students developing positive character traits. GTCC will make a 100% refund of registration fees if you officially withdraw from class BEFORE the first class meeting. GTCC will refund 75% of the registration fee (of tuition only) if you officially withdraw from classes on the first day of classes OR before the class reaches the 10% point.
