Nursing Assistant I Program

The Nursing Assistant program consists of 198 hours of classroom and clinical studies and takes approximately three months to complete. Students are prepared to provide personal hands-on care to patients, residents, and clients. Nurse Assistants work in a variety of health care settings such as nursing homes, hospitals, private homes, home health agencies, assisted living facilities,hospice, and medical doctor's offices. Successful completion of the program qualifies the student to sit for the NC state nursing assistant test and state certification.

Nursing Assistant I Program Information

Registration Fee for the Course: $203.00
Required Items & Fees for the First Day of Class: Books - $108.34 at the GTCC Book Store
Additional Required Items (will be discussed during the first class - no need to purchase for first day)

  • TB Test AND Flu vaccine - approximately $30.00 each - MD, clinic, or Health Department
  • All White Scrub Uniform and white shoes - $25.00-$100.00 (may be purchased at any department store or uniform store)
  • Watch with a second hand - $10.00 - $12.00
  • Pocket note book - $1.00

The Program

  • You are expected to have the required textbook and skill packet and to have read the first three chapters by the first day of class.
  • Once you are in a class, you are required to submit copies of : High School diploma or H.S. transcript or GED or College Transcripts (in English, please); Official Social Security Card or a letter from Social Security administration stating request for replacement card; picture ID (Government issued). The Instructor will not make the copies for you.
  • You will need to have 2 copies of a negative TB test result and flu shot valid throughout the duration of the training.
  • Your class instructor will let you know the date these items are needed.
  • The TB test, flu vaccine, supplies and clinical uniform are requirements of the program.

Policies of Nursing Assistant I

  • The clinical site may ask you to sign a waiver to allow your criminal history to be obtained, or you may have to get this done on your own.
  • Lab and Clinical times and location may vary from your class schedule. You will need to have a flexible schedule. Refunds will not be given for schedule changes students are unable to accommodate.
  • The attendance policy is very strict. You may be dismissed from the program if you are absent more than once or frequently late during the classroom portion of the class. You will be dismissed if you are more than five minutes late or absent during clinical.
  • You will be given weekly multiple-choice question tests. Your Instructor will conference with you frequently to help you achieve your goals. You may be dismissed from the class at the end of theory if your average is below 77%. Achieving a passing grade of 77% on the cumulative final exam and passing skills performance tests in lab allows the student to proceed to the clinical rotation of the class.

Physical / Behavioral Requirements

  • The job description for Nursing is both physical and stressful.
    • There is no light duty available.
    • You must be able to lift 50 pounds, stand for up to 5 hrs, stoop or bend without assistance, be able to listen to soft sounds, and speak English fluently.
    • You must be able to accept constructive criticism, control your temper and follow directions carefully.
  • Unprofessional or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.
    • Disrespectful, interruptive, disruptive, impatient behavior toward the instructors, fellow students, staff or clinical staff will not be tolerated at any time.
    • You will be dismissed during any portion of this class should your reaction be inappropriate at any time.
    • You may be dismissed if the RN Instructor suspects you are a safety risk in clinical due to a student physical or behavioral issues.
    • You may be dismissed if you are caught cheating, suspected of alcohol or drug use on campus or before class.
    • You will be dismissed for fighting, or for the use of profanity or demonstrating an attitude that would frighten a patient such as loud, raised, angry voices.
  • If you are dismissed from a class for any reason, you are not eligible for a refund.
