COMPASS Testing
GTCC's placement test is COMPASS. The COMPASS placement test is an untimed, multiple choice assessment. The test can be suspended (stopped saving your work up to that point) and completed at another time. The placement test evaluates a student’s academic skills in Reading, English (Writing), and Math. It is designed to determine whether prospective students are ready to immediately enter college level classes or whether they need some additional preparation.

We encourage you to review your writing, reading, and math skills before you begin COMPASS. GED or SAT study materials are very helpful. These are available from most libraries and bookstores. A study guide for COMPASS, Chart Your Success on the COMPASS, is also available to be checked out overnight from the Learning Resource Center or it may be purchased at the GTCC Bookstore.

You will receive your COMPASS results as soon as you complete the test. The placement test is not pass or fail. Your scores will indicate your placement into either college prep refresher courses or Curriculum Math and English courses. Once you complete the test, you will be referred to the Counseling Center or College Transfer Advising Center based on your program of study, to have your scores interpreted.

If you are interested in GTCC’s eLearning degrees, and are not located near one of our campuses, you may take the placement test at one of the other community colleges in North Carolina, or at a COMPASS Testing site, and have the results transferred to GTCC. Many colleges and universities across the country offer the COMPASS Placement Test. You will want to contact a college or university near you to see if you can register for and take the test at their institution. You may also call ACT Education at 1-800-645-1992 and speak with a customer service representative to receive assistance in finding a COMPASS testing center near you. You may also select an area from this map to locate a test center near you.

COMPASS Testing Times
The COMPASS Test may be started anytime between these hours:
