| Head Coach - Treka McMillian |
Treka McMillian will be coaching the Lady Titan basketball team as it takes the court for its inaugural season, 2008-2009. She is a seasoned head coach with an 81-31 record. McMillian is no stranger to coaching as she has spent the last 15 years coaching at different levels of basketball. Even more important is that McMillian knows how to build a team from scratch. This is her second time to tackle the difficult job of building a team. The first time was at Minneapolis Community and Technical College in Minnesota. She revived a program that was dormant in 1999 and in 2004 led her team to a NJCAA Division III national championship. She was national coach of the year and Region XIII coach of the year in 2004. She has also snagged Coach of the Year in the Minnesota Community College Conference in 2001 and 2002.
Recruits at GTCC should know that McMillian’s Minneapolis players led the conference as the best defensive team three years in a row in the MCCC. While there, she coached two All-Americans and the 2004 national player of the year. Her “upstart” Minneapolis team was ranked in the top 10 three consecutive years finishing as high as 2nd in 2003. She was also an assistant coach at Concordia University (NCAA Division II), 1997-99; and at University of Minnesota (NCAA Division I), 1993-1997.
McMillian, a graduate of the University of South Carolina which recruited her from her home in Chadbourn, NC, was captain of her USC team (1988-1992) her last two years. McMillian has also coached high school in both South Carolina and Georgia and AAU teams in Georgia, Minnesota and North Carolina. McMillian believes in coaching the all-around student-athlete which lends to her philosophy “It’s not just about basketball; it’s about life.”
McMillian is a member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and is a resident of Greensboro.
