Who is my counselor?
All Allied Health and Cosmetology students are assigned to counselor Judiann Tobin. All other students are assigned to faculty advisors. If you are assigned to a faculty advisor and wish to talk with a counselor, you may see any of the counselors in the Counseling Center on any GTCC campus.

Where can I find my faculty advisor?
You may look up your assigned faculty advisor online. Scroll to the Division area of the page and follow the link to your program's department page. Students are assigned to program advisors by the first letter of their last names.

Each semester, faculty members post that semester's office hours on their office doors. The best thing to do is to find your advisor's office, note their office hours, and make an appointment. If you have repeatedly tried to contact your advisor without success, you should then contact the department chair of the program, and ask for help.

Special credit students should see a counselor for academic advising.

Am I required to be advised?
GTCC considers academic advising to be an important part of student success. It provides a link to a faculty member in the student's academic program who can ensure that the student is following the correct sequence of courses in order to graduate or achieve his/her goals. Students are not required to be advised each semester, but are strongly encouraged to meet regularly with their faculty advisor.

When do I register for classes?
You will be sent a registration notice each semester which tells you the earliest date and time that you may register by TRACS, GTCC's telephone registration system. You may not register prior to your assigned date and time. You should see your faculty advisor prior to the registration date.

How do I change my program or major?
If you want to change to a program that is limited enrollment, you must complete an application in the Admissions Office. To change to a program that is not enrollment program, you will need to see a counselor and complete a Change of Curriculum Form.

I have taken courses at another college. What will transfer to GTCC?
College courses completed with a "C" or better may be transferred to GTCC from accredited institutions. An official transcript is required and you must be enrolled at GTCC as a degree, diploma, or certificate seeking student. An unofficial evaluation of your transcript may be obtained by meeting with a counselor prior to enrolling at GTCC.

What should I do if I am undecided about my major or career goal?
You should meet with a counselor as soon as possible to begin the process of career exploration. This may involve completing assessments of your interests, abilities, and work related values. The counseling staff will be happy to assist you with deciding on your educational and career goals.

What do I need in order to transfer to a four-year college?
In general, most four-year colleges in North Carolina require a minimum of 24 or 30 semester hours in order to transfer. This may vary from college to college. Please check with the colleges you are considering to determine their specific transfer requirements.

How will my courses transfer to four-year colleges?
If you began taking courses in the NC Community College System since the fall of 1997 and complete a college transfer associate's degree, you will be eligible to enter any of the 16 colleges in the NC University System with junior status. This does not guarantee acceptance; your grade point average (GPA) is one of the factors used to determine acceptance. You may wish to complete only the 44 semester hour general education core courses. Completion of these will guarantee that you have met the general education requirements for all of the 16 campuses of the UNC system. There are also private colleges in North Carolina with whom we share these agreements as well. When in doubt about the transferability of a course, please check with the four-year college.

Is it better to transfer with or without a degree?
In most cases it is better to transfer with the associate's degree. This is especially true if you are not sure which of the UNC colleges you plan to attend after GTCC. On the other hand, if you know for sure which college you plan to attend and what your major will be, it is sometimes advantageous to transfer after 30-45 semester hours. Review the catalog of the college you plan to attend with your advisor or a counselor to determine which decision is best for you.
