 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

This page contains answers to the most frequently asked questions about eDegrees. You'll find questions from students, faculty, and staff below.

Student FAQ's

1. How much does the eDegree program cost?
Tuition for courses in the eDegree program is the same as tuition for “on campus” courses. Current tuition information can be found at http://www.gtcc.edu/departments/admissions/generalInfo/residencyTuitionRates.html.

2. How often do the classes start?
Courses in the eDegree program run on a regular college semester schedule, with classes starting in January and in August. For the Spring 2009 semester, classes begin on January 12th and end on May 11th. For the Fall 2009 semester, classes begin on August 17th and end on December 14th.

3. Why is the eDegree application deadline before open registration?
Because these are limited-enrollment programs, students in the online programs are registered before open registration. Our application deadline for the Fall 2009 semester is July 15th; however, we will give priority to those applicants who complete the application process before June 30th.

To be considered for the program, applicants must complete a GTCC application, our program application, and placement testing by 5:00 p.m. on the application deadlines. We must also have copies of high school and college transcripts by this time. Applicants will also need to successfully complete our online orientation prior to being registered for classes. Those who cannot complete this orientation will be referred to other GTCC programs.

4. What happens when a program is full?
Once a program is full, we will waitlist other qualified applicants, letting them know when openings become available.

5. Am I required to be online at a certain time?
Generally, no. Most program courses run on a weekly schedule, with students completing assignments at their convenience by a certain deadline. Specific professors have different requirements, so always check the course syllabus. How can I contact my instructors? Your instructors’ contact information will be on the course syllabus. You can also check the college directory at http://www.gtcc.edu/directory/Default.aspx.

6. Will I need to purchase textbooks or other materials?
Yes, most classes require textbooks. Some classes require additional materials, such as a web cam, a microphone, or a lab kit. This information is generally available a month or so before classes start and can be found on the bookstore web site at http://www.bkstr.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10866&langId=-1&catalogId=10001 .

7. Will I need to come to campus for tests?
Some instructors may require proctored examinations. However, you can make arrangements to complete these at other proctoring locations, not just on campus. To learn more, visit http://www.gtcc.edu/distance/degreeonline/proctoring.asp.

8. I’ve been out of school for a while. Are there any materials available to help me review for the placement tests?
Sure! The Assessment Center offers workshops to help students review and prepare for placement testing. Here’s a link to a brochure with more information: http://www.gtcc.edu/docs/rss/docs/CompassBrochure.pdf.

9. Which placement tests do I need and where can I take them?
If you haven’t taken the SAT or ACT, you will need the COMPASS Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Writing, and Reading tests. The Office Administration, Medical Transcription, Office Administration Receiptionist, and Software Applications programs require the COMPASS keyboarding test in addition to these other placement tests.

Placement testing is offered on a walk-in basis daily at the Jamestown Campus and at the Greensboro and High Point campuses on specific days throughout the year. To learn more, visit the Assessment Center’s web site at http://www.gtcc.edu/departments/assessment/index.html.

Faculty and Staff FAQ's

1.  What happens if the "e" sections held for online degree programs don't fill?  Will those seats be opened to other students?
Yes.  Those seats will be opened for other students by open registration in August.

2.  What do I do if an eDegree student in one of my classes isn't doing well?
Contact Deana St. Peter or Kent Cowan to let us know.  You may also want to refer the student to GTCC's distance Counseling Service, Ask the Counselor.

3.  How does a student in an eDegree program withdraw from a class?
The student contacts the instructor, Deana, or Kent to complete the appropriate paperwork.  We will need the student's last date of attendance (the last time he or she submitted an assignment) and his or her reason for withdrawing.

4.  I caught an eDegree student cheating or plagiarizing.   What should I do?
Let Deana know and complete a Deportment Charge form to send to Dr. Jaqueline Pettiford that details the incident.

5.  Can I require eDegree students come to campus for proctored exams?
Yes and no.  You can require proctored exams, but the location needs to be convenient for the student.  Please see the guidelines on our site for setting up a proctored exam at http://www.gtcc.edu/distance/degreeonline/proctoring.asp or contact Patrick Holyfield at the Assessment Center for help.
