Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium

GTCC is housed on the site of what used to be a tuberculosis sanatorium. Prominent Guilford County residents, the Tuberculosis Association and various women's civic groups worked hard to promote and generate enough interest to build this major TB facility in Guilford County. December 20, 1921 the voters of Guilford County passed a bond issue for $100,000 to build a sanatorium in the county. Additional monies were provided through generous donations.

When the Sanatorium opened in early 1924 it accommodated 48 patients. Maxium capacity over the years was 140 patients in 1936. Beds decreased to 120 over the next few years because of the decline in need and remained at this capacity until closing in 1955.

In September 1955, the County Commissioners, upon the recommendation of the Sanatorium's Board of Directors, voted to close the facility. The number of tuberculosis cases in the county and across the state had decreased to a point that the state facility in Moore County was able to serve the remaining patients. The land and buildings of the Sanatorium remained vacant from 1955 until 1958.
