1916-1950s

Fall 1916
First meeting of a group of Guilford County citizens to discuss plans to combat tuberculosis
December 20, 1921
Voters approve $100,000 bond issue to build Sanatorium. Additional $125,000 provided through county and private donations
January 22, 1924
Guilford County Tuberculosis Sanatorium officially opens with 46 beds. Dr. J. L. Spruill appointed as Superintendent
1926
A Children's Building opens to treat youth with tuberculosis
May 1, 1934
Dr. M.D. Bonner becomes Superintendent upon the death of Dr. J. L. Spruill in 1934.
1936
Sanatorium at maximum capacity with 142 beds 1950s
   

1950s

December 24, 1955 Sanatorium closes, approximately 40 patients move to State Sanatorium in Moore County
November 14, 1957 Proposal for local Industrial Education Center sent to Guilford County Commissioners
April 3, 1958 Industrial Education Center proposal approved by Board of Education for center at Jamestown. Sanatorium facilities allocated to GIEC by County Commissioners
May 3, 1958 Center’s first Advisory Committee appointed, Ed Kemp appointed Chairman
May 1958 Bruce B. Roberts named first Director of the Guilford Industrial Education Center
August 1958 42 students enroll in classes at the GIEC
August 1959 First year ends with 593 students enrolled. New programs added to the curriculum
1959 Machinery Hall the first building constructed on the campus
 

1960s

September 1963 General Assembly shifts control of industrial education centers to the Department of Community Colleges. Local control vested in a Board of Trustees
September 1963 Eight member Board of Trustees established, Zalph Rochelle appointed Chairman.
September 1964 Over 7,000 students receive training and over a thousand students enroll in technical, distributive, trade, practical nursing, and adult education at the Center
May 6, 1965 State Board of Education, recommended by the Department of Community Colleges, approves Guilford Industrial Education Center as a Technical Institute. Technical, trade, general and adult and community service programs offered
  Dr. Herbert F. Marco appointed the first president of Guilford Technical Institute
1965 GTI vested with authority to grant the Associate in Applied Science Degree
August 19, 1965 Guilford Technical Institute dedicated in a formal ceremony officiated by Governor Dan K. Moore
  Furniture Hall dedicated
September 15, 1965 Four new trustees appointed to the Board by Governor Dan K. Moore, H. Frank Startling, John T. Davis, Robert O. Kistler, and John W. Thompson
May 22, 1966 Inauguration of Dr. Herbert F. Marco as first President of GTI
  Mrs. Virginia Bangiola of High Point becomes the first student to receive an Associate in Applied Science degree from GTI
June 11, 1967 First Graduation Ceremony held
  The 1st I Am An American Day held at GTI
June 13, 1967 Dr. Herbert F. Marco resigns as President of Guilford Technical Institute
August 8, 1967 Dr. Luther R. Medlin named 2nd President of GTI
1967 First issue of college yearbook published, Whispering Pines, (1967-1976)
Fall 1968 GTI's basketball team, The Green Hornets, plays first games
February 1968 Department of Adult Education offers classes
December 3, 1969 GTI becomes a member of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
August 23, 1969 GTI launches Aviation Technology Program 1970s
 

1970s

May 25, 1970 Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association announces accreditation of dental programs
June 8, 1971 Successful county-wide bond referendum appropriates $3 million to GTI for construction projects
January 21, 1972 1st homecoming event held at GTI
November 1972 GTI leases Hangar from the Piedmont Triad Airport
1973 GTI purchases Guilford College's Downtown Campus
March 7, 1974 State Board of Education announces GTI accreditation
July 1, 1975 Dr. Woodrow B. Sugg named 3rd President of GTI
February 1975 Learning Resources Book Walk
June 1977 Dr. Harold J. Owen appointed 4th President of GTI
   

1980s

June 1980 Dr. Raymond J. Needham named 5th President of GTI
June 1983   State Board of Education approves request to add college transfer program at GTI
May 16, 1983 GTI celebrates 25th birthday
July 1983 GTI’s name changed to Guilford Technical Community College. The college begins to offer a college-transfer curriculum.
March 1985 Wellness Center dedicated
November 1984 J. C. Price Complex opened
   

1990s

1991 Dr. Donald W. Cameron appointed 6th President of GTCC
November 1994 Ciba donates $225,000 to GTCC’s Tech Prep Program
January 13, 1995 GTCC receives a National Science Foundation grant to bring Internet access to to the college
April 1995 State Board of Community Colleges approved proposal to convert NC Community College System to semester system. Implemented Fall Semester 1997
June 1996 Donald Cline donates $100,000 to build an Observatory on the Jamestown campus
October 1996 Percy H. Sears Applied Technologies Center dedicated
November 1996 Wall Street Journal article about GTCC Business and Industry Program
October 23, 1997 GTCC officially opens the Cline Observatory
1999 Koury Corporation donate $500,000, largest gift ever made to GTCC
  Joseph S. Koury Hospitality Careers Center dedicated
October 15, 1999 The Larry Gatlin School of Entertainment established, the first of its kind in the state offered by a community college

August 2001 Middle College Program opened on GTCC Jamestown Campus
June 12, 2003 Middle College Program opened on GTCC Jamestown Campus
July 2003 Gladys S. Sears Endowed Teaching Chair in Business Technology established
November 2003 High Point Campus - Gatlin Entertainment Technology Building opened
April 2004 Children's Center celebrates its 25th anniversary
January 2005 New Greensboro Campus - Adult Education Center opened
August 2006 GTCC's men's basketball and women's volleyball teams start
