About GTCC Library Instruction

GTCC Information Literacy Program

The goal of the GTCC Information Literacy program is to help students become independent and lifelong learners who are able to find, evaluate, and use information effectively to solve problems and make decisions. Developing information literacy skills is a structured and progressive process and is not something that can be learned in a one shot session. The library strongly believes information literacy skills should be integrated throughout the GTCC curriculum and that students receive both instruction and research assignments throughout their two years at GTCC. The library will work with you to tailor instruction to a particular assignment as well as help you develop effective research assignments for your students.

Types of Instruction Offered

One-on-One instruction for students: At the request of students, librarians will schedule a one-on-one session with them to assist in their research.

Before Scheduling Library Instruction

When scheduling instruction, please keep in mind that the library must have at least 5 days notice to better prepare instruction to meet the research needs of your students. The Duplicating Center also needs time to complete copying jobs for the handouts we prepare for your class/es.

The library's lab and library instruction are in high demand and slots fill up quickly. Although we will do our best to accommodate your schedule needs, we cannot guarantee the availability of the library's lab or a library instructor on a given date or time. Scheduling library instruction as far in advance as possible will better your chances of us accommodating your first choice date/s and time/s.

Before students come for library instruction, please explain to them why it is important for them to attend this session. Library instruction is most effective when

students know the purpose of why they are attending a session and

when a session is scheduled in conjunction with a class research assignment.

Faculty Attendance

Faculty are strongly encouraged to attend and participate in sessions with their students in order to emphasize the importance of information literacy. Recognize that students will take their cues from their instructors. The attitude an instructor takes towards libraries and research skills instruction will inevitably communicate itself to students.
