Request a Library Instruction Session

Guidelines:

1. Please give 5 days notice of request and complete the form below within 5 days of scheduled instruction. Requests may be denied if less than 5 days.

2. Instructors must remain with the class at all times.

3. Instruction will take place in LRC 202. If the room is unavailable, librarians can come to the classroom and teach the class if the Internet and data projector is available.

4. You will receive a confirmation email by the librarian scheduled to teach the class. The instruction session is not confirmed until you receive the confirmation email from a librarian. You must select topics from the list below to receive a confirmation email from a librarian. You must also provide a description or provide the assignment in order to receive a confirmation email from a librarian.

5. A copy of the assignment or explanation of the assignment is required to facilitate library instruction.

6. Time of instruction is estimated. The length will depend on how students interact with the librarian.

Matineé-1 (ENG 111): will include Search Strategies, Catalog Search, Academic Search Premier, Citation help, how to contact the library, and orientation assignment (50 minutes)

Matineé-2 (ENG 112) : will discuss CQ Researcher, Issues and Controversies, and SIRS databases, citation help, and how to contact the library (50 minutes)

Search Strategies: A discussion of various search techniques such as Boolean searching and "tricks of the trade" 10 Minutes  
Introduction to library website: An overview of the library website 10 Minutes  
Introduction to a subject guide: A review of the relevant subject guide 10 Minutes  
Types of Sources: discussion of scholarly vs. popular sources, electronic vs. print resources, webpages vs. database sites. 10 Minutes  
       
  The Main Event (15 minutes each) each dish includes accessing the library from home    
Catalog Search: Hands on explanation of the library catalog (print books, videos, and ebooks) 15 Minutes  
Online databases: Tutorial of at least one online database. If time allows, more than one database could be shown. Please select at least one:

Website Evalutation: Provides varioius guidelines to evaluate websites. students will be asked to evalutate websites in groups and report their findings in class. 15 Minutes

Citation help: Online tutorials, guides, and websites will be provided and demonstrated 5 Minutes  
     
Paraphrasing and using Microsoft products: discussion of how to paraphrase from sources and basics of using Microsoft Word 07. 5 Minutes  
Copyright/Plagiarism: A brief discussion of copyright guidelines and how to avoid plagiarism will be discussed with students. 5 Minutes  
       
  Finale (5 minutes each) always included    
How to Contact the Library: Librarians will review the various communication tools students may use to contact the library including how to access the library resources from home. 5 Minutes
