Any resident of the State of North Carolina may use the GTCC libraries and borrow materials.  GTCC students currently enrolled in one or more for-credit classes have expanded borrowing privileges.  To borrow library materials, GTCC students must have a current student ID.  Others, herafter called "community borrowers," must have a valid North Carolina picture ID.

Compass test preparation books are available at the Jamestown, Greensboro, and High Point Campus libraries.  You may borrow one for 3 days.   You must leave a $50.00 cash-only deposit.  We return your deposit in full if we receive the book back within 3 days.  Overdue charges are $10.00 per day, not counting weekends.

Compass test preparation books are available to anyone with a valid North Carolina picture ID.

Smaller libraries with computer workstations are at the Greensboro (Adult Education Center) and the High Point (Bldg. H4) campuses of GTCC.  The collections at each of these libraries are focused more specifically to programs offered at these campuses.

Users of the Greensboro and High Point Campus libraries have the same access priviliges as those at the main Jamestown Campus library, including access to all online information resources and computer workstations.

Books and other materials housed at the Jamestown campus will be delivered within two days to the Greensboro or High Point libraries upon request.

The GTCC libraries have computer workstations for your use. These have Internet access as well as productivity software like Microsoft Office.  To use the Internet, you must log in by clicking on your library location.  Using the Internet on a library workstation means that you will adhere to GTCC and the GTCC Library's Internet Policies.

 

$1.00 / day late.  We charge for $5.00 for damage

A fax machine is available at the Reference Desk of the Jamestown library. The charge for sending a personal fax is $1.00 for the first page and $ .10 for each page thereafter.

There is an additional $3.00 charge for each international telephone number dialed. Incoming faxes may be picked up at the Circulation Desk.

+Always begin international calls with 011, then country code, etc.

Students with a current GTCC picture ID, faculty, and staff may borrow from other libraries if the GTCC libraries does not have an item. Other libraries rarely lend videos. Users must pay for the cost of photocopies acquired through this service, although borrowing books is usually free. To request a book or periodical article through interlibrary loan, complete an Interlibrary Loan Book Request Form online.

  • The library contains an instructional lab with 25 student workstations, an instructor's podium with workstation, and a data projector.  Group instruction in using library resources or software is available and encouraged. Arrangements may be made with the Library Director (x2502), with a Reference Librarian (x2287 or x2236), or at the Main Service Desk (x2292 or x2293).

Jamestown Campus (601 High Point Road, Jamestown, Learning Resource Center)

  • Nonfiction books you can borrow are on the first, or bottom, floor.

  • Fiction books you can borrow are on the second floor around the circulation desk and on the third floor.

  • Magazines and journals are on the second floor.  These must stay in the library, but you may copy articles from them.

  • Videos and books on tape are on the second, main, floor.

  • Reference Materials
    Books, magazines, and journals on the second, main, floor, are reference materials that must stay in the library.  Selections from these may be copied.

 

  • The GTCC libraries subscribe to a number of magazines and journals in print as well as to several newspapers. Periodicals may not be borrowed.

Jamestown Campus Library:

Current Issues:
The latest 3 months, approximately, of periodicals are located on the left side of the library as you walk through the main entrance. The most recent issues of these periodicals are on display, and the previous two months or more are stored underneath the shelves.

Back issues:
Back issues of periodicals are available upon request from the Periodicals/Reference Desk located on the right side of the library as you walk through the main entrance. If you are interested in a particular back issue, ask the person behind this desk.

Periodical Holdings:
You can find out what periodicals the library owns as well as the years and formats (print, microfilm) the library holds by searching the GTCC library catalog - The catalog contains the most current information on periodical holdings. Search the catalog by Exact Title. Holdings information is listed at the end of each periodicals record.

The following is a brief explanation of abbreviations and terminology from holdings information:

  • 1990 - means that the library has, in one form or another, issues of that periodical beginning in 1990 and continuing into the present.

  • Bound means the hard or print copy of the periodical have been assembled into books. Each bound copy contains issues for a particular period of time (several months, 1 year, etc.). Bound periodicals are located behind the Periodicals Desk.

  • Mag means the library holds the hard or print copy of ther periodical.

  • MF means "microfilm." For assistance in locating microfilm in cabinets and operating a microfilm reader/printer, see a librarian or staff member.

Periodicals CANNOT BE CHECKED OUT but you may make copies of the pages you need by using the photocopiers available in the library.

Periodicals online:

The library subscribes to electronic databases that contain the full-text of articles for many magazine, journal and newspaper titles as well as indexing for those that are not full-text but available in print at the GTCC libraries or elsewhere. When in a GTCC library, any library user may access these resources.  If off-campus, GTCC students have access to these resources by obtaining passwords.

Non-students may obtain passords to the NC LIVE collection through a public library.

 

 

Jamestown Campus: A free GTCC student ID obtained at the Student Government Office, or a facsimile ($3.00) which may be purchased in the Jamestown library or the Applied Technologies computer lab is needed to print from all open-access computers or to use some copiers.  Optionally, other copiers accept coins.   Change from bills less than twenty dollars may be obtained at the Circulation Desk.  Change for larger bills may be obtained at the book store.

Greensboro and High Point Campuses: Printout is paid for by cash at the circulation desk.  Copiers accept coins.  Change for small amounts may be obtained at the circulation desk.  The book store sometimes has change for larger amounts.

Printout and copies are $ .10 per page at all locations.

 

Librarians are available during all hours of library operation to help library customers identify, interpret, and utilize various sources of information. Please ask them for assistance. Our Reference librarians are happy to provide in-depth reference assistance by appointment and classroom library instruction.

Instructors place books, articles, audiovisuals, or other items on reserve for students in their classes. These items vary in check-out time. Reserves should be requested from the Circulation Desk.

If you are at the Jamestown campus library, the first floor (downstairs) is the designated quiet study area.  Please see our Quiet Policy. Do contact library staff if any area is too noisy for you.
