GTCC and GCS: Partners in Teacher Education
In February of 2008, the Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) Lateral Entry Program joined Guilford County Schools (GCS) in their efforts to become the first school district in the State of North Carolina to offer an alternative certification program for teachers.
The partnership began when Lateral Entry Coordinator, Dawn Hicks Tafari, was approached by Guilford County School's Executive Director of Talent Development, Amy Holcolmbe. After much discussion, both parties agreed that a partnership of this nature would be beneficial for both agencies.
The Guilford County Schools Alternative Certification Track (GCS ACT) was approved by the State Board of Education in June of 2008 and recruitment commenced immediately. A cohort of newly hired lateral entry teachers will begin this intense, practical program at the end of July, 2008 and should earn certification by the middle of August, 2009.
This new program provides a time-efficient and effective way for anyone with a baccalauereate degree, at least 24 hours in the licensure area, and a passion for teaching to become fully certified to teach in North Carolina.
