Ancient Coins to be Featured in History Club’s Presentation

(Released 2/23/11)

JAMESTOWN - Guilford Technical Community College's History Club will have ancient coins on display and some for sale at 1 p.m. Friday (March 25) in the Koury Hospitality Careers Center auditorium.

The event is open to the public free of charge.

Numismatist Tom Woods will give a talk on how foreign coinage form he American and global economies during colonel times. He will pass around rare coins so listeners can "actually hold" the money circulated in the early years of America, according to Dr. Jeff Kinard, chair and instructor of history, political science and geography.

Coins from the Roman through the colonel eras will be sold for prices often less than $10, Kinard said. Profits will be used for the club's ongoing project of sending care packages to United States troops in Afghanistan.

For more information, contact Kinard at jskinard@gtcc.edu or at 334-4822, Ext. 2257.
