Atkins Brings Home Silver In SkillsUSA Contest

JAMESTOWN -- Nathan Atkins of Greensboro, a Guilford Technical Community College student, brought home the Silver Medal in the Diesel Equipment Technology contest at the 46th annual National SkillsUSA Conference in Kansas City, MO. He competed against 32 other contestants in the event held from June 20 to June 25.

Atkins, who finished eighth in the same category last year, received several prizes, including tools and tool boxes from Snap-On Tools and MAC Tool Co. The Diesel Equipment Technology contest included 13 skill stations that had contestants performing tasks such as welding, precision measurement, live- engine diagnosis and safety.

More than 15,000 students, teachers and business partners participated in the event , including 5,600 career and technical education students who won at the state level SkillsUSA competition in 96 different trade, technical and leadership fields.

Other GTCC students that placed in the top 10 in their respective contest:

  • Robert Lundeen of Thomasville, seventh in Related Technical Math.
  • Nicholas Goble of Jamestown, eighth in Advertising Design.
  • Ravindra William of Greensboro, eighth in Telecommunications Cabling.

Receiving honorable mentions were:

  • Katy Orell of Greensboro, 11th in Commercial Baking.
  • Andy Lunnen of Winston-Salem, 12th in Culinary Arts.
  • Sophanara Khoeun of Lexington, 14th in Collision Repair Technology.
