JAMESTOWN - "GTCC is getting the job done when it comes to training workers for companies in the Triad," said Coy Willard, chairman of GTCC Trustees.

Willard points to GTCC's scores on the recent report of the eight performance measures mandated of all community colleges. "We passed all eight measures and had a passing rate on licensure certification exams of 94 percent, which is much higher than the state standard," he said.

"That means that when these students pass those licensure certification exams they are ready to go to work. This is really an important part of our mission of training workers for the Triad area," he said.
"Many companies, like TIMCO and Honda Jet, keep coming back for us to set up more training programs. We have raised the bar in being able to meet the training needs of business. GTCC has adapted to the needs of business," Willard said.
GTCC also scored 94 percent on the category of "Client Satisfaction with Customized Training."  Willard said, "That shows that we are flexible and responsive to companies training needs."

"Those standards mandated by the state are important in that they establish goals that define our status as a college. At the same time, we see how we compare with other community colleges in the state," he said.
The recent report showed that GTCC was among 26 North Carolina community colleges that met all eight of the performance measures.

"We're poised for things to come. One of the first things businesses looking to locate in an area ask is 'Tell me about your community college,' " Willard said.
"We have a lot to offer in job training, and we're excited about the construction of the Cameron Campus at Oak Ridge and the Triad Center for Global Logistics Technology that will be located there," he said.
" We're not only training people for jobs but they are higher paying jobs," Willard said.
Dr. Brenda Kays, vice-president of student learning and success, deserves credit for GTCC scoring well on the state measures, he said. "She did a magnificent job of making sure all of our programs were on track and meeting the standards," Willard said.
He said that other areas of GTCC's "report card" show that improvements are being made in other programs, and he likes seeing the progress that is being made.
