Boswell Gains Another Term on State Cosmetic Art Board

(Released 6/15/2010)

JAMESTOWN - Morris W. Boswell, department chair and assistant professor of cosmetology at GTCC, has been appointed to the N.C. Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners by Gov. Beverly Perdue.

He will begin his three-year term on July 1. Boswell served seven years on the board under appointments by former Gov. Jim Hunt, leaving the board in 2001. Perdue said Boswell's "leadership and commitment are critical to this commission as part of our efforts to strengthen our communities and improve the quality of life for our citizens."

The six-member board is responsible for licensing, oversight and discipline of cosmetologists, estheticians, manicurists, apprentices and teachers of cosmetic arts, Boswell said. The board has the authority to administer examinations; issue, renew and revoke licenses; and conduct investigations.

The board establishes continuing education requirements for licensees, including the number of hours and courses of study. The board has the authority to approve, license and inspect cosmetic art schools, he said.

Boswell has spent 34 years working in cosmetology, and has been at GTCC for nine years. He also is president of the N.C. Community College Cosmetology Instructors Association.

The GTCC cosmetology program is "very successful and we have a waiting list of potential students," Boswell said. In the spring of 2011, GTCC will begin evening classes for cosmetology in order to accommodate more students, he said.
