(Released 2/8/2010) HIGH POINT -- The High Point Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. Don Cameron, president of Guilford Technical Community College, with the BB&T Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award at its annual meeting on Feb. 4. Friends and business associates echoed their sentiments of why they think he was so deserving of the honor in a special video. Cameron said he was "humbled by this honor and totally dumbfounded by this surprise." Chamber officials praised Cameron for working tirelessly to make GTCC the hub for creating jobs and an educated workforce in the Triad. "Dr. Cameron is a leaders' leader. He loves this school and has positioned it for a tremendous future. He epitomizes the qualities of leadership required for his numerous civic endeavors," said Shirley Frye, chairperson of the GTCC Board of Trustees. Tom Dayvault, president and CEO of the Chamber, said Cameron "is always focused on results and reflects the credit to others." The Chamber gave out its annual Volunteer of the Year award to Janette McNeill, dean of GTCC's High Point campus. She is a member of the Chamber's Board of Directors, and is a member of numerous committees such as PC's for GEDs and Leadership: High Point. Max Meeks, the recently retired radio morning man, was given the "Champion of Free Enterprise Award." Meeks was recognized for spending 50-plus years on WMFR as the "voice of High Point" and for being one of the city's greatest ambassadors. #### (NOTE - This information was sent to news media on Feb. 4-5 but because of not having access to GTCCALL, we were unable to share it with the GTCC family at that time.) -- Bob Burchette, GTCC Publicity)
