FORMER CHIEF JUSTICE TO SPEAK AT FIRST LEADERSHIP GRADUATION

Judge-Henry-Frye-Sr

JAMESTOWN -- Former Chief Justice of the N.C. Supreme Court Henry E. Frye Sr., who has accomplished several "firsts" in his career, will be keynote speaker for the first graduating class of the Piedmont Leadership Academy at GTCC on Thursday (Feb. 9).
The ceremony to recognize 20 graduates will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Koury Hospitality Careers Center on the Jamestown campus.

The program is modeled after the Western N.C. Law Enforcement Academy at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College. The program at GTCC consisted of six sessions, with the first session being held last Sept. 12-16 and the last session running
Feb. 7-9.

The topical areas of the program are "self" and "self and organization," according to Sandra Neal, associate professor of criminal justice at GTCC. Before officers can lead others, they should have an in-depth examination of leadership issues and practices that are to be utilized in law enforcement, Neal explained.  This offers opportunity to relate "self" to the law enforcement agency's purpose and mission, she said.

Frye, an honors graduate of NC A&T State University and UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law, became the first African-American to serve in the N.C. House of Representatives in the 20th Century. He was elected to that position in 1963 and later was elected to the N.C. Senate.

In 1983, Frye became the first African-American to serve on the N.C. Supreme Court.  He was appointed Chief Justice by Gov. Jim Hunt in 1999. He has practiced law in Greensboro for several years, and also was organizer and president of Greensboro National Bank.
