JAMESTOWN - Founder's Day for Guilford Technical Community College will be observed from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9, on the Jamestown campus at 601 High Point Road.
The event is open to GTCC students, employees, alumni and to the public, according to Margot Horney of the GTCC Foundation. The foundation and the GTCC Student Government Association are sponsoring the event. All activities are free of charge.
The front lawn near the new parking deck will be the place where games will be played and a picnic will be held. There will be inflatable games, caricature artists and a live karaoke band, Mr. Microphone. In case of rain, the event will be moved to the cafeteria in the Medlin Campus Center.
The school's first classes were held in 1955 in a building at 716 English Road in High Point. Those were furniture and hosiery training classes. The school was chartered June 12, 1958, as Guilford Industrial Education Center.
The school's first campus was on the 89 acres of the former Guilford County TB Sanatorium on High Point Road in Jamestown.
GTCC now has campuses in High Point, Jamestown, Greensboro and at Piedmont Triad International Airport. Work has begun on the Cameron campus in northwest Guilford County near Oak Ridge.
