GTCC’S ROBERT J. MENTON RECEIVES AIRPORTS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

GREENSBORO - Robert J. Menton of Stokesdale, who is enrolled in the aviation program at Guilford Technical Community College, was awarded a $1,500 academic achievement scholarship April 29 by the N.C. Airports Association.
The award was made at a banquet, which was part of the NCAA's annual conference at Grandover Resort and Convention Center April 27-29. Menton maintained a 4.0 grade point average for two years while enrolled in fulltime courses in the aviation management degree program at GTCC.

The Long Island, NY, native will enroll in Embry Riddle Aerospace University for further undergraduate work and will be studying aviation safety systems. That university has classes on the GTCC campus near the Piedmont Triad International Airport.
Menton was introduced at the banquet as a former Marine, prompting him to quip "I'm still a Marine." That brought a standing ovation for Menton for about three minutes, he said.

Menton started his aviation career after joining the Marine Corps in 1983. He served overseas on three different occasions, including a full year aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. He was among the first airmen technicians in both Navy and Marine air-wing fleets to support the F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets. Menton participated in the F/A-18's first combat missions over the Mediterranean Sea against defenses in Libya in April 1986.  "I became intrigued with aviation," he said, "but more since I left the Marine Corps." Menton holds an FAA Airframe and Powerplant license, FCC certification with radar endorsement and is ground certified in VFR, IFR and commercial flight rating criteria.

He has been employed by McDonnell Douglas and Dyn-air, and also spent 13 years with TIMCO Aviation Services.
Menton also received an academic achievement award from GTCC on April 26.
He and his wife Kimberly have two children Caitlyn, 7, and Avery, 13.
