(Released 3/23/11) JAMESTOWN - Sandra Luvender, a second-year nursing student at Guilford Technical Community College, is among 25 national selections to receive a Frank Lanza Memorial Scholarship. The scholarships are for $1,000 each and are awarded to facilitate completion of associate degrees in nursing, respiratory care or emergency medical services. Luvender, who lives in McLeansville, wants to work in a hospital trauma department after she earns a four-year degree in nursing. The scholarships are named in honor of the founder of L-3 Communications, a global defense company that produces $15 billion in annual revenues and employs about 66,000 people worldwide. Lanza died suddenly at age 74 on June 7, 2006, while recovering from surgery. The scholarships will be presented at a Phi Theta Kappa convention April 9 in Seattle. Luvender, a native of Bosnia who moved to the United States in 2005, is the only student in North Carolina to receive a Lanza grant. She is expected to graduate from GTCC on May 12, and then make plans for seeking a four-year degree. ####
