GTCC Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter Wins Awards at State Meeting

(Released 3/30/11)

JAMESTOWN - The Alpha Phi Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Guilford Technical Community College won four regional awards and had honorable mentions for five other awards at the recent Phi Theta Carolinas Region Conference at Village Inn in Clemmons.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honors society for two-year colleges.

The GTCC chapter was named a five-star chapter - the highest rating a chapter can receive, and also received Honors in Action excellence, Four-GIG service project excellence and Carolinas Super Stars awards.

Five-star status is a designation given by Phi Theta Kappa International to connote chapters who have met several criteria in four areas of excellence defined by Phi Theta Kappa: scholarship, fellowship, leadership and service, according to faculty advisor Melissa Maley, an associate professor.

Each year all chapters are given a study topic and expected to research the theme, organize educational community projects, involve many in the wider college community and send members to regional conventions for training, Maley said. Phi Theta Kappa then rates chapters on a long checklist related to these events.

Christina Guzik, vice president of service for Alpha Phi Alpha, received honorable mention as a distinguished chapter officer.

Other honorable mentions were in the most improved chapter, distinguished college project, distinguished Honors in Action project and best website categories.

Assistant professor Kristi Short also is a faculty advisor.
