JAMESTOWN - Both the men's and women's basketball teams at Guilford Technical Community College compiled impressive records by the time school was out for the Christmas holiday break. The women's team compiled a 15-1 mark in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association but hasn't appeared in the national rankings. This is only the second season of play for the Lady Titans, and Athletic Director Phil Gaffney speculated that a few more wins should get some attention from the pollsters. Lady Titans Coach Bobby Allison, who has won national coach of the year honors and many other awards, now has a 230-20 record as a head coach at the junior college level. His Mohawk Valley Community College (NY) team compiled a 215-19 record. The Hawks also won three straight national championships. He is in his first season at GTCC. "I'm surprised at that 15-1 record; we should be 16," Allison said. "We lost in overtime to a team that we should have beat (Cincinnati State)," he said The GTCC men's team took a break after running up an 11-2 record and being ranked ninth in division II of the NJCAA. The team has been ranked as high as seventh in the young season. Allison's team will resume play Jan. 13 by entertaining Denmark Technical Community College at 5:30 p.m. in Ragsdale YMCA Gym in Jamestown. This will be the first of a three-game home stand, which also includes Spartanburg Methodist, 2 p.m. Jan.16; and Denmark again at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 20. The men's team will open the second half of the season by participating in a tournament Jan. 8-9 at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, FL. ###
