The Powell award honors the first female firefighter to die in the line of duty. She died Sept. 23, 2002, in a vehicular accident while on duty with McLeansville Fire Dept.  She had served as a firefighter in Rockingham, Forsyth and Guilford counties.
The former Guilford College Volunteer Fire Dept. served the county for more than 50 years and was among the leaders in firefighting training. The department was incorporated into the city of Greensboro when the city expanded its limits.
