(Released 1/28/10)

JAMESTOWN - What a difference a year makes.

Guilford Technical Community College coach Phil Gaffney was lamenting his 2009 men's basketball team finishing the season with the worst record (12-20) of any team he has coached.

Today Gaffney's Titans are ranked No. 4 in the nation among Division II teams in the National Junior College Athletic Association. GTCC was No. 9 before defeating No. 8 Louisburg in a 71-70 thriller last Saturday.

The Titans added another victory over Pitt Community College (80-64), running their record to 17-3.

Gaffney said in a pre-season interview that his 2010 team possibly could be his best team since starting the basketball program at GTCC three seasons ago.

Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Mich., is No. 1 in Division II, with a 19- 0 record, followed by Erie Community College, Buffalo, at 15-1 and Monroe Community College, Rochester, at 14-1.
