JAMESTOWN -Connie Buterbaugh, a GTCC student from Jamestown, has been selected to participate in the N.C. Community College Student Leadership Development program, which will begin with the first session June 26-July 1 at Peace College in Raleigh. The six-day summer session will be followed by two mini-sessions which will be scheduled for the fall and spring. Only 30 students from the state's 58 community colleges were selected by state community college officials for the 2011-2012 program. The program is sponsored by the N.C. Association of Community College Presidents and by the N.C. Community College System.
Buterbaugh, vice-president for clubs of the GTCC Student Government Association, will graduate from GTCC in spring 2012. "I hope to continue my education in engineering at N.C. State University," she said. After talking with GTCC Student Government Association president Darren Lipman of Asheboro, Buterbaugh is convinced that the leadership program will be a "tremendous opportunity."
Lipman was in the program last year, and pointed out some of the subjects that are taught : • Personality types; leadership styles. • Decision making; team building; workshop building. • How to work with others to complete a task. • Time management; conflict resolution; ethics in leadership. • How to delegate responsibilities successfully. • How to be a leader worth following. • Networking to achieve a goal; and effective communications.
Lipman, who also plans on attending N.C. State to major in math, said the program was "well-worth" attending and "absolutely" a positive experience. Karen Yerby, a co-director of the state program, wrote to Buterbaqugh: "Your commitment must be serious…and the experience, fun and excitement of the SLDP will be decisive. As you will see, this will be the opportunity of a lifetime! You will set precedence and contribute much to the future growth and potential of student leaders who follow in the community college system."
