JAMESTOWN -- Michael Knowles, a Guilford Technical Community College student from Jamestown, won the gold medal in Extemporaneous Speaking at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference last month in Kansas City, MO. Two GTCC students brought home medals, while eight others placed in the top 10 in their respective contest.The other medal winner was Rheta Whittington of Greensboro, who brought home the silver award in Advertising Design. Fourteen students and eight advisors from GTCC attended the conference June 20-25. Other winners from GTCC: • 4th place, Crime Scene Investigation - Ashley Pennington and Donna Druly, both of Greensboro and, Corey McRae of Trinity.. • 4th place, Culinary Arts - Plamen Marinov of Greensboro. • 5th place, Commercial Baking - Amy Lowe of Lexington. • 7th place, Aviation Maintenance Tech - Douglas McCumber of Greensboro. • 8th place, Collision Repair Tech - Terry Landreaux of Greensboro. • 9th place, Criminal Justice - Yessenia Morales of High Point. GTCC students getting honorable mentions were: • 11th place, Food and Beverage Service - Greg Layton of Randleman. • 12th place, Diesel Equipment Tech - Joshua Speagle of Gibsonville. • 13th place, Esthetics - Jessica Deese of (High Point and Victoria Johnson (model). Knowles scored 94.5 out of a possible 100 points, and beat out 22 other competitors. He is the first person from GTCC to compete in the extemporaneous speaking contest. This is the third time GTCC has had a contestant win a silver medal in the advertising design contest. GTCC also competed in the crime scene investigation and criminal justice contests for the first time.
