JAMESTOWN -Jolane McCain is "a natural" at dealing with the hectic days of helping hundreds of students who need information for completing files so they can register for summer, fall or spring semester at Guilford Technical Community College.
McCain said she loves getting to know the students, and especially likes helping them...

And she has grown with her job as a records technician during her more than 35 years at GTCC. "Jolane is one of the hardest workers I have ever seen," said Jesse Cross, Director of Admissions. "No matter how big the mountain of transcripts gets, she laughs and gets it done," Cross said.

McCain, who worked in the admissions office at Cleveland County Community College before coming to GTCC, will leave transcripts and other forms behind when she retires July 1. She will remain living in High Point.

She also will leave behind some good thoughts by her colleagues.

Registrar Dr. Brad Burch said she "epitomizes the example of a model employee. It was not uncommon to see her entering information into the computer about a student, speaking to another student who had just walked to her desk, and then answering the phone and asking a third student to hold briefly. Her excellent work ethic and laughter will be sorely missed."

Cross added, "I could never put into words how impressed I am with her personality and work ethic. All I have to do to brighten my day is to stop by her office for five minutes."

"I am always amazed at her ability to tell you where a student's file is located simply based on you giving her the name and date the transcript was received," said Michelle Hines, an admissions representative. "Her keen memory of student names is impeccable," she added. "No matter how many times a day you go to her, she would greet you with a smile and stop what she is working on to assist her co-workers," Hines said.

Being affable comes natural to McCain, who grew up in the Washington community about 10 miles outside of Shelby. With seven children in her family, and lots of relatives living nearby, McCain says "we were always close." And "close" meant caring - and those who know McCain recognize that caring attitude.

Among her fond memories as a youngster in Cleveland County was visiting relatives. "I loved to ride my bicycle to my grandparents' house, and to also go see my cousins and other relatives," McCain said.

After graduating from high school, McCain earned a two-year degree at Cleveland County Community College in Shelby. "Then they came to me and offered me a job," she said. Her main activities are shopping, doing a little interior decorating, and walking for exercise. She also is active at Temple Memorial Baptist Church.

And most likely McCain will be seen at GTCC from time to time. She said she wants to enroll in some classes at GTCC - just whatever interests her at the time. "Doing that helps keep your mind sharp," she said.
