(Released 2/24/2011)

JAMESTOWN - Guilford Technical Community College's women's team wiped out Wake Tech, 70-54, Wednesday (Feb. 23) at Ragsdale YMCA and captured their third consecutive conference championship.

The Lady Titans will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, which opens Friday, March 4, at Lenoir Community College in Kinston. GTCC earned a bye for the opening day, and will play the winner of Friday's 2 p.m. game between Catawba Valley and Brunswick. The Lady Titans will play at 1 p.m. on Saturday (March 5).

The winner of the tournament will represent Region 10, Division II, of the National Junior College Athletic Association in the national tournament which will be held March 15-19 in Peoria, IL.
GTCC will finish its conference schedule against Brunswick on Saturday (Feb. 26). The Titans have a 15-2 conference record, and an overall mark of 25-4.

Coach Bobby Allison said 10 of his Lady Titans' 30 games were against teams in higher divisions higher than his Division II team. "Our record is really a testament to how hard we played. We had a really difficult schedule. I think our balanced scoring, with four players averaging in double figures, was important to our winning. Also, our defense has been much better and improved as the season progressed," Allison said.

The Lady Titans have held the opposition to fewer than 50 points in 13 of 29 games.

Leading scorers have been four freshmen -- Jeanette Oxner of Monroe (12.4 points per game), Asia Wheeler of Brooklyn, NY, (10.1 ppg.), Jessica Watkins of Lynchburg (10 ppg.) and Tracie Collins of New Bern (9.4 ppg.).

Allison, former women's coach at Mohawk Valley (NY) Community College, is completing his second year at GTCC and has a record of 268-26 in nine years as a head coach. He has won the conference title both years since taking over the helm from Treka McMillian, and was named conference coach of the year last season.

McMillian, the Lady Titans first coach when the team was started three seasons ago, also tied for the conference championship.

Allison took his Mohawk Valley team to the Final Four in Division II five times.
