GREENSBORO - Grammy-winning singer Larry Gatlin of Austin, TX, will be the graduation speaker for Guilford Technical Community College at 7 p.m. Thursday (May 13) at the Greensboro Coliseum. A record 1,085 students will graduate, topping last year's class of 1,071 graduates. The graduation will be open to the public, and free parking will be available. Gatlin is no stranger to GTCC, having helped establish the Larry Gatlin School of Entertainment Technology on the school's High Point campus. A frequent visitor to the school, Gatlin has established a strong relationship with GTCC and with college president Dr. Don Cameron. Gatlin, 62, was an English major at the University of Houston where he received a football scholarship. He entered law school but dropped out to pursue his interest as a singer and songwriter. He has had success as a soloist but has enjoyed his best years singing with his two brothers. Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers' most recent release is "Pilgrimage," which was produced by Johnny Cash's son, John Carter Cash. The album is homage to Larry Gatlin's mentors, and also points to Gatlin's talent as a storyteller. Johnny Cash and Dottie West were among those mentors. He also is known for his Broadway role in the "Will Roger Follies" in 1994. Gatlin's best known hit songs include the Grammy- winning "Broken Lady," the Gold Album "All the Gold in California," "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer To You)," 'She Used to be Somebody's Baby," "Love Is Just A Game" and "Sure Feels Like Love." ####
