Lewis Will Retire After Directing Play He Wrote

(Released 6/17/2010)

JAMESTOWN - "NEAT or I Swear I Didn't See Franz Kafka," written and directed by William R. Lewis in celebration of his retirement from Guilford Technical Community College, will highlight the summer theater season at the college with performances at 8 p.m. July 14-17 and 2 p.m. on July 18.

The play, a short comedy, centers on a young country music artist and her friendship with an older man who is dying. Featured in the cast are GTCC drama faculty Michael J. Kamtman and Laura Simcox. All performances will be in the Fine Arts Theatre of the Joseph S. Koury Hospitality Careers Center on the Jamestown campus. Tickets are $12 for the general public; $10 for senior citizens (age 60 and older); and $7 for students. For reservations, call 334-4822, Ext. 2496.

Lewis, who has been director of the drama program and artistic director of GTCC Theatre for nearly 22 years, will retire in August.

Shows for the 2010-11 season also have been selected, Lewis said.

The new season will feature:
•  "The Immersibles," 8 p.m., Nov. 17-20 and Dec. 1-4. This is a new play by Tommy Trull.
•  "Marcus Is Walking," 8 p.m., Feb. 16-19 and Feb. 23-26. The program features eight short plays by Joan Ackerman, all set in cars. Lewis terms it "a wonderful critique of modern American Life."
•  The 14th annual New Play Workshop, 8 p.m., April 20-24. Staged readings of new writing by area playwright Ed Simpson.
