JAMESTOWN - Darren Lipman of Guilford Technical Community College is one of 30 students in 20 states to receive $1,000 Leaders of Promise Scholarships from Phi Theta Kappa honor society.
Lipman, who is the only North Carolina recipient of the scholarship, is a math major who plans on getting a four-year degree after completing work for his two-year associates degree at GTCC.
The honor society based in Jackson, MS, provides the scholarships for students enrolled in two-year associate degree programs. "The Leaders of Promise Scholarship funds provided represent an investment in human potential," said Rod A. Risely, Phi Theta Kappa executive director. "Our objective is to provide the resources and programs that will result in the emergence of strong moral servant leaders," he said.
Lipman lives in Asheboro and was home-schooled at LearnedTech Homes School. He is president of GTCC's Gay-Straight Alliance, recording secretary for Alpha Pi Alpha, which is GTCC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and a Student Ambassador.
Lipman will receive $500 in each of two semesters at GTCC, and must maintain a good academic record.
