(Released 2/3/2010)

GREENSBORO - Manuel C. Dudley, a leader at Mitchell Community College in Statesville, has been named dean of Guilford Technical Community College's Greensboro campus at 3505 E. Wendover Ave.

Dudley assumed the position on Feb. 1, succeeding Bill Geter, who retired Nov. 1 after 25 years with GTCC. The announcement of Dudley's hiring was made by Leroy Stokes, vice-president for corporate and continuing education.

Dudley, 37, lives in Greensboro, and has been a commuter to Statesville for six years. "I'm excited about this opportunity; it is a dream come true," Dudley said.

A native of Goldsboro, Dudley received a Bachelor of Science degree in human development and family studies with a minor in psychology from UNCG in 1994. He also received a Master of Science from UNCG in 1997.

He is working on his doctorate in Leadership Studies at NCA&T. "My dissertation is on the benefits of formal and informal mentoring of Africa-American male community college presidents," he said.

Since 2003 he has been dean of math, natural and social sciences, human services and cooperative education at Mitchell Community College. He was head of the human services technology curriculum program at Wayne Community College in Goldsboro before taking the position at Mitchell.

Dudley also has worked as a residential director for three years, and was the assistant director and mental health consultant and staff trainer with All Arts and Sciences Camp at UNCG for five years.

He was a behavioral therapist with Charter Behavioral Health Systems for two years.

Stokes said that he is excited about having an administrator with Dudley's experience taking charge of the Greensboro campus. "With his experience within the N.C. Community college System, he is familiar with the administrative codes and regulations we must follow, and I'm sure he is familiar with similar types of policies and procedures he must utilize at GTCC."

Dudley's strong background in curriculum also impresses Stokes. "He will be an asset in helping to strengthen the curriculum/continuing education program," Stokes said.

The new dean has worked in various leadership roles with the community college system. He is vice president for the N.C. Association of Community College Instructional Administrators, and has been association treasurer and a member of the organization's steering committee.

Dudley was co-coordinator of a $33,000 grant from the Governor's Crime Commission to improve minority male student retention, academic performance.

Dudley and his wife Kimberly have a seven-year-old daughter, Sonni Myelle. Kimberly Dudley, a native of Rocky Mount, is a Realtor.
