Neil Belenky Takes GTCC Post As Director Of Development

(Released 6/23/2010)

JAMESTOWN - Neil Belenky, who spent 18 years as president of the United Way of Greater Greensboro, has been named Director of Development for the Guilford Technical Community College Foundation.

Belenky will succeed James S. Belk, who has been executive director of the GTCC Foundation for 10 years. The title for the position held by Belk has been changed under a reorganization plan that includes merging the foundation with the college's marketing and public relations department.

Belenky, a native of Springfield, MA, retired from the United Way in August 2009 after an outstanding career, which included the formation of the Women's Alexis de Tocqueville Society and the development of a gifts-in-kind program with the Welfare Reform Liaison Project.

After retiring he was honored by his friends with the establishment of a $200,000 gift in his name, which generates a $10,000 Tocqueville Society gift to the United Way each year.

His most recent work was with the Weaver Foundation in Greensboro, where he was involved in fundraising for the International Civil Rights Center & Museum. He and former N.C. Supreme Court Chief Justice Henry Frye were co-chairmen in the project that raised $803,000 for the museum.

After the effort to enlist individual donors, Belenky also put together a corporate fundraising campaign for the museum.

Belenky came to the Greensboro United Way in 1990 after leading the United Way in Kalamazoo, MI. He attended Lake Forest College in Chicago and American International College in Springfield. Belenky earned a masters degree in social work at the University of Connecticut.

He and his wife Marilyn have three sons and two grandchildren.

Belenky said he became interested in the GTCC position because he has always had a tremendous passion for GTCC, its mission of helping people and the college's central role in fostering economic development in Guilford County.
