JAMESTOWN -Matthew DeSantis, who is in his second year of teaching political Science at Guilford Technical Community College, has been named "club advisor of the year. DeSantis, who has taught political science at High Point University, the University of Texas at El Paso, Furman University and the University of Florida, is advisor for the GTCC Political Science Club. Each member of the club nominated DeSantis, according to Berrilyn Cross, director of student life. She said that some of the comments made about DeSantis were: "He worked tirelessly to promote and advance the club; he is an extremely informed person who is always looking for new ways to help the club; he never hesitates to offer advice and is loaded with extra information about our field; he educates us on current events as well as campus events; and he has showed that politics can be interesting and rewarding." DeSantis has presented his research on politics and social movements at many national conferences, including the American Political Association, and his work has been published in peer-reviewed journals. GTCC's "club of the year" also was selected and that honor went to Phi Beta Lambda, Cross said. The club was led by president Jody Mack. Phi Beta Lambda paid tribute to club advisor Merilyn N. Linney who passed away last Oct. 14. She had taught at GTCC for 30 years. The club did several fundraisers and hosted a spring jam on the High Point campus. Community service projects included the campus clean up, visiting a nursing home, and holding the inaugural Martin Luther King celebration in conjunction with the Jamestown community. An advisor appreciation day in which they thanked administrators, faculty and staff also was a highlight for the club.
