JAMESTOWN - Lorrie Campbell, the new president of the N.C. State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologists, is pushing to get state lawmakers to require certification for all surgical technicians.
"Did you know that when you have your hair or nails done that the people doing the work have to be certified but certification is not required of surgical technicians if you have surgery?" she asked.
Campbell of High Point, an instructor and clinical coordinator in surgical technology at Guilford Technical Community College, moved from vice-president to president of the state surgical technology group during the association's annual meeting earlier this month in Wilmington.
"At the present time only a handful of our local hospitals and other hospitals across the state require certification for surgical technicians. Our goal as the new N.C. State Assembly of the Association of Surgical Technologist board is to focus on requiring certification within all of our hospitals," Campbell said. Many states already require certification for these technicians, she said.
Campbell, 38, who has worked at GTCC since 2001, is a certified surgical technician and still does some work in area hospitals. She has a two-year degree in applied science from GTCC and is working on a four-year degree at Gardner Webb University at Boiling Springs. She is a 1980 graduate of Sherman High School in Charleston, WV.
She and her husband Christopher Campbell have two children, Hanna 12, and Caleb, 15.
Campbell participates in several community activities, and also is on the Accreditation and Review Committee of the Association of Surgical Technologists. She also is a member of the ASP's National Standards Committee.
