JAMESTOWN - Ana Marie Roberto of Greensboro was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship and a laptop computer at Guilford Technical Community College.
The awards were made by the Crumley Roberts law firm through the Crib to College Foundation. The foundation awards five scholarships each year to community college students who will pursue four-year degrees.
Roberto, who was in the college transfer program at GTCC, will enroll at N.C.&T State University to study biological engineering. "I want to work with plant genetics," she said.
To become a Crib to College scholar, a student must have at least a 2.5 grade point average and have significant community involvement such as volunteerism and involvement with non-profit projects.
Roberto, daughter of Michael and Nancy Roberto of Greensboro, graduated from Grimsley High School but spent most of her high school years at Northeast Guilford High. "We moved about two months before I was to graduate at Northeast," she said.
Roberto, 28, is a single mom who works fulltime at a Greensboro restaurant.
She said she enrolled in GTCC to earn college credits and to get a focus on a new career. Roberto said that her college experience helped her get that focus and also motivated her to continue her education.
"The experience I had at GTCC will help me start out at A&T in the biological engineering curriculum. This (GTCC) helped prepare me for the university," she said.
Roberto said she has learned to discipline herself to study, work and care for her son. "I've also learned what not to do in my personal life so that I will have time to study and attain my educational goals," she said.
