Several Scholarships Available

JAMESTOWN - The Ray Moody Leadership Scholarship, worth a maximum of $1,000, is available only to Guilford Technical Community College students, but some other grants available to GTCC students also are available for students attending other schools.

Deadline for the Moody scholarship, named in honor of GTCC's first director of student activities and alumni affairs, is noon, April 17. The scholarship was established in 1987 by the college's Student Government Association, staff, faculty, alumni, family and friends.

Applicants must show "evidence of involvement in the quality of student life at GTCC," and evidence of community/citizenship involvement. Also required are an essay, a faculty recommendation and at least a 2.5 grade point average.. Applications are available from Berri Cross in the Student Life Office, room 132, Medlin Campus Center on the Jamestown campus.

GTCC also has a $1,000 Developmental Education Scholarship for a deserving person who is a former or present developmental education student. The student must be attending GTCC this semester.

Deadline for applications is April 9. Information and applications are available by contacting Susan Barbitta at 334-4822, Ext. 2922.

Among other scholarships available are:

  • American Cancer Society's Champion College Scholarship, which will assist childhood cancer survivors. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500; the application deadline is April 15. More information and an application form are available at SA.College@cancer.org or by calling 1-800-227-2345.
  • Triad Women's Forum scholarships are for financially needy women students in the Greater High Point Area. Deadline for applying is April 17. Criteria for gaining a scholarship are available by contacting Tonia Stephenson, scholarship committee chair, at 881-5444. Applications must be sent to Ms. Stephenson at 121 SW Cloverleaf Place, High Point, NC 27263.
  • The Troy Carr Scholarship, which honors the memory of the late NC Alcohol Law Enforcement agent from West End, offers up to $1,000. Carr was killed in the line of duty in 1994. The scholarships are renewable. The current application deadline is April 30. Application forms and Information are available at www.troycarr.org
