New 2014-2015 Staff Association officers announced

Mit Sunnassee wants to give back.

As an alumna of GTCC, she understands how difficult it can be to fund an education, while balancing work, life and school. Sunnassee has been there before. She raised three daughters while pursuing an associate degree in information systems at GTCC. And she couldn't have done it, she says, without the financial support of the college. Now, she wants to pay it forward.

"I have been through that path before when I was here (at GTCC)," Sunnassee said. "I want to give back, and this is one of the ways that I can give back."

Sunnassee is the new 2014-2015 president of the GTCC Staff Association, which serves as a voice for the concerns of full-time and part-time staff members. It also hosts events throughout the year to raise money for student scholarships.

Sunnassee is a native of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean near Madagascar. Fifteen years ago, she and her husband moved to the United States in order to provide better job opportunities for their three daughters. Soon after, she enrolled at GTCC at the suggestion of friends and earned her associate degree. Three days later, she landed a job.

"I do hot yoga. It makes me sweat and stretch a lot and all my pains are gone."

"I cross all the T's and dot all the I's. I do not leave any stone unturned on my way. I'm very detailed."

"My sweet tooth is never satisfied."

"I graduated Friday night, and GTCC asked me to work Monday morning part time,"

Sunnassee said. "And the next month they hired me full time."

Today, Sunnassee is the administrative assistant and building captain for the H5 facility on the High Pont Campus. She's been working at GTCC for 13 years and has been involved with the Staff Association for the last several years, most recently as vice president and High Point Campus representative the prior year.

Her three main goals for the Staff Association this year are to raise more money for student scholarships, work closely with administration to achieve the association's goals and inspire more staff members to become involved in the association and "feel that they are part of GTCC," she said.

"This is the place where they can come, and we'll try to be there for them and be the voice of the staff as much as possible. … We can make GTCC a better place."

Joining Sunnassee as officers of the 2014-2015 Staff Association are:

•    Vice President/President Elect: Wendy Smith, Specialist, Auxiliary Services

•    Aviation Representative: Wendy Walker-Fox, Program Coordinator, National Aviation Consortium

•    Greensboro Representative: Jodi Newkirk, Administrative Assistant, Greensboro Campus Center

•    High Point Representative: Lenore Coleman, Administrative Assistant, Dean of the High Point Campus
