JAMESTOWN - Julia Wells of Greensboro(left) and Penelope Westgard of Jamestown(right) each received a $5,000 scholarship from the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation in a ceremony recently at Guilford Technical Community College.

Members of the credit union fund the scholarships through the foundation as part of SECU's philosophy of "People Helping People."  The scholarship program recognizes the recipient's leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement, according to Jimmy Goodrum, manager of SECU's Westchester Branch in High Point.

Jacqueline Pettiford, a SECU Advisory Board member. and dean of Educational Support Services at GTCC, said credit union members "continue to show their commitment to education." SECU scholarships are awarded annually at all of the state's 58 community colleges. Since 2005 the credit union has awarded more than $4 million in scholarships.

Westgard, a graduate of Page High School in Greensboro, is enrolled in the Human Services Program and hopes to get a degree in Social Work.

Wells earned her GED at GTCC last spring, and hopes to become an ultrasound technician.
