Students Still Enrolling at GTCC in Record Numbers

(Released 1/26/2010)

JAMESTOWN - The 13,954 students enrolled for the spring semester at Guilford Technical Community College is the largest enrollment for any semester in the nearly 52- year history of the college. The figure eclipses the previous record enrollment of 13,520 for the fall 2009 semester.

The spring numbers represent a 21.7 percent increase over the 11,469 students who enrolled a year ago.

"The increased enrollment demonstrates the impact the college has on Guilford County and the surrounding areas," said Dr. Alison Wiers, associate vice-president of student learning and success. "As people are being faced with downsizing in their organizations, many are turning to GTCC to enroll in classes that will help them upgrade their skills or gain education in a new field," she said.

The enrollment at GTCC has increased for 12 consecutive years. The number of students enrolled in curriculum classes was 6,244 a dozen years ago.

The current enrollment shows 8,223 of the students received financial aid, an increase of 51.6 percent over those receiving assistance for the spring 2009 semester.

Including enrollment for continuing education and basic skills classes, GTCC has more than 41,500 students.
