The Seminole, TX, native is best known for his hit songs with the Gatlin Brothers. His all-time smash hit was "All the Gold in California" in 1979 and "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)" in 1983.
Gatlin teamed with Barry Gibb to write "Indian Summer" in 1985, which Gatlin recorded as a duet with the legendary Roy Orbison.
Gatlin also starred on Broadway in "The Will Rogers Follies."
Gatlin was an English major and football player at the University of Houston.
He credits country music legend Dottie West for his breakout as a songwriter and for performing opportunities early in his career. West introduced him to some of the best songwriters in the world, he said.
