Veteran GTCC Administrator Named Executive Vice President

(Released 1/6/2010)

JAMESTOWN - Rae Marie Smith has been promoted from vice president of administrative services to executive vice president of Guilford Technical Community College.

Smith's appointment by GTCC President Dr. Don Cameron was effective Jan. 1. Smith succeeds Cuyler McKnight, who left the position in November to become president of Oak Ridge Military Academy.

Cameron said that Smith has been with the college for 22 years and is "well positioned to accept her new responsibilities. With my external responsibilities increasing, it is important that we have someone in the executive vice president position who truly understands the day- to-day operations of the college. Rae Marie has these skills."
She said her new position provides "a great opportunity to continue serving the college."

Smith was employed by GTCC as comptroller in December 1987, and became vice president of administrative services in July 1998. She is a native of the Roanoke, VA, area, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and mathematics from James Madison University. She also earned a master's degree in business administration from Lynchburg College.

Smith previously worked for State Farm Insurance in Charlottesville, VA, and also in various positions with the City of Lynchburg.

She and her husband Carl Smith live in Jamestown.
