WORK BEGINS ON PARKING DECK ON GTCC'S JAMESTOWN CAMPUS

JAMESTOWN - Work has begun on the construction of a five-level parking deck that will provide 359 new parking spaces on the Jamestown campus of Guilford Technical Community College.

The construction, which is being done by Samet Corporation/SRC Inc. of Greensboro, is scheduled for completion by the beginning of the 2011 spring semester.

The project is expected to cost less than the $12 million designated for the parking deck in a $79.5 million bond issue approved by Guilford County voters in 2008.

While Samet is doing the major work on the project, there are costs for other companies involved with design, consulting and construction work, according to Charles Young, GTCC construction coordinator.

The parking deck is being built on the High Point Road side of the campus, near the Stuart B. Fountain Dental Science Building. A new street will be built from High Point Road, directly in front of Medlin Campus Center and to the side of the parking deck.

The new road will merge into what is now known as Montgomery Circle but that circle will be enlarged to help improve the traffic flow in the area of the parking deck, Young said.

The construction area, including Montgomery Circle, has been fenced for safety purposes during the construction, and some traffic has been diverted to other areas on campus.
