Developmental Education

The Developmental Education program is the backbone of GTCC's open-door admissions policy. Some students seek admission to curriculum programs and find themselves under-prepared. Developmental Education offers these students a program to develop academic skills to enable them to enter their chosen curricula with an improved chance for success.

At the opening ceremonies of the new academic year, we learned that 80% of all new students need developmental education. On the other side of the coin, 53% of GTCC's students started their academic studies by taking one or more developmental education course.  Moreover, 51% of GTCC's graduating class of 07-08 started in developmental education. Developmental education students are all of our students.  Good foundations make memorable graduations.

Nearly all students who apply to associate degree programs and those who apply to some one-year diploma programs have their skills evaluated in reading, writing, and mathematics. Applicants whose scores fall below the minimum required by curriculum programs or for entry-level courses in English, reading, and/or mathematics are referred to Developmental Education for course work. Developmental Education courses may be taken prior to or with some curriculum courses, depending on guidelines of the chosen program of study.

Developmental Education Courses

Developmental Education courses also include academic related courses to college study skills or e-degree study skills. Students who wish to improve their basic academic skills may be select developmental education courses. The courses are offered in reading, English grammar and composition, academic skills, and English as a Foreign Language, and mathematics. These courses allow students to concentrate on their individual academic needs and gain confidence in their abilities.

Learning Assistance Centers

Free tutoring is offered in the Learning Assistance Center for curriculum students who seek assistance with their coursework.  The purpose of the tutoring program is to help students become independent and successful learners by developing strong study skills, a better understanding of course content, enhanced self-confidence and a positive attitude toward learning.

Professional and peer tutors are available to meet the individual needs of students.  Peer tutors are currently enrolled students who have shown proficiency in the course in which they are tutoring and have been recommended by their instructors to be tutors. Peer tutoring is offered by appointment for developmental and curriculum courses. Professional tutors are available on a walk-in basis to assist students with developmental courses.

If you are interested in receiving tutorial assistance or becoming tutor, see the Learning Assistance Center staff for further information.
