More than 80% of the region's employers need staffs who understand IT (that's Information Technology). Computer Information Technology encompasses many different jobs and requires people with diverse skills and interests. High-tech companies have a continuing need for trained customer support specialists to staff the help desk, answering customer problem calls, and providing timely assistance in solving technical problems.

If you have always loved technology, had a knack for figuring out solutions and a desire to create and tinker, Guilford Tech has a perfect program for you. We’ll prepare you to work with computers to process, manage and communicate information. You’ll enjoy this program because it’s hands-on. If you're serious about acquiring the skills needed to enter this fast-paced industry, then Guilford Tech’s Associate in Science degree in Computer Information Technology is for you.

This program is designed to teach you the fundamental skills and knowledge required to support personal computers in both a networked and stand-alone environment. You will learn how to maintain, analyze, troubleshoot, and repair computer systems. You will understand and know how to work with hardware and computer peripherals.

The course work that you will be taking includes computer systems technology and operations, logic, operating systems, database, data communications/networking and related business topics. Your studies will provide you with the experience to implement, support, and customize industry-standard information systems. Course work includes computer systems terminology and operations, logic, operating systems, database, data communications/networking, and related business topics. Course work will develop your ability to communicate complex technical issues related to computer hardware, software, and networks in a manner that computer users can understand. Your classes will cover computer operations and terminology, operating systems, database, networking, security, and technical support.

Upon graduation you should qualify for a wide variety of computer-related, entry-level positions that provide opportunities for advancement with increasing experience and ongoing training. Duties may include systems maintenance and troubleshooting, support and training, and business applications design and implementation.

You may also be qualified to sit for industry-recognized certification exams.

Upon successful completion of this program, you should be able to:
install and configure PC operating systems;
use application software to manipulate business information;
select, upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot PC hardware;
perform basic PC network installation and administration tasks;
apply analytical and problem solving skills to typical microcomputer systems planning and implementation issues.

Typical Tasks May Include:
configuring, installing and operating LAN, WAN, and dial access services for computer network systems;
performing network administration using a network operating system and other tools;
providing customer service support and technical assistance using the latest technology;
providing hands-on technical assistance such as computer repair and software installation;
performing hands-on laboratory testing and troubleshooting of personal computers, peripheral devices, and operating systems.
