Paralegal Technology Program
|
The Paralegal Technology curriculum prepares individuals to work under the supervision of attorneys in performing routine legal tasks and assisting with substantive legal work. A paralegal may not practice law, give legal advice, or represent clients in a court of law.
Course work includes substantive and procedural legal knowledge in the areas of civil litigation, legal research and writing, real estate, family law, wills, estates, trusts, and commercial law. Required courses also include subjects such as English, mathematics, and computer operation.
Graduates are trained to assist attorneys in probate work, investigations, public records search, drafting and filing legal documents, research and office management. Employment opportunities are available in private law firms, governmental agencies, and other business organizations. |

| Program Objective |
Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to: • comprehend basic civil, criminal, domestic and business law concepts, and understand legal and ethical restrictions on the practice of law;
• demonstrate an understanding of basic investigation concepts, techniques and sources as they apply to civil and criminal cases;
• research defined legal questions and properly cite legal authorities;
• handle management affairs of a law office under attorney supervision;
• assist an attorney in drafting wills and other planning documents and in preparing documents for the administration of a deceased’s estate;
• demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts of N.C. real estate property law and assist an This objective is to be accomplished by:
1.
Teaching substantive areas of law and skills applicable to the vocational requirements of a paralegal, including both theoretical concepts and practical application, and providing training in both litigation and transactional areas of law;
2. Maintaining a high academic standard for paralegals by providing thorough and effective instruction;
3.
Determing the roles and functions of paralegals in the community, emphasizing ethical conduct and the effective delivery of legal services within the community;
4.
Evaluating the needs of employers for properly trained paralegals by maintaining contact with the legal community and determining their training needs. |
