Work-Based Learning
|
| What is Work-Based Learning? |
Through work-based learning, students gain practical experience in the work environment, enhancing their classroom course work. Work-based learning programs such as Apprenticeships, Cooperative Education, and Internships, provide the following benefits:
Educational work experience
Networking opportunities within their career field
College course credit (in some cases) |
| |
| High School Apprenticeships |
| High school students participating in the College Tech Prep Apprenticeship program work in their career field during their junior or senior year. Students work part-time during the school year and full-time in the summer. These apprenticeships can continue during their course work at GTCC and possibly count as co-op placement. |
| |
| Cooperative Education |
As a GTCC student, you may be able to complement your classroom learning experiences with off-campus employment while completing your degree. Such an arrangement is called Cooperative Education. The work experience you gain will closely relate to your academic study, and you receive academic credit for your employment.
Cooperative ("co-op") efforts of GTCC, local employers, and students create an ideal learning environment: information (theory) and hands-on practice (practical application). Students can work part-time while in school or alternate periods of course work and on-the-job practice.
Co-op participation may be required, offered as course substitution(s) or as an exploration opportunity, depending on the student's program of study. To determine if you meet the requirements for co-op participation, ask your faculty advisor or department chair. |

| Internships |
| College Tech Prep Completers who enroll at GTCC can Intern with a local business. These jobs, while unpaid, offer valuable experience in the work environment and the opportunity to meet and learn from professionals within their field. |
